‘VOICES’ Aug 2022
‘VOICES’ – a site-specific installation by Maureen Crosbie
Having graduated as a Fine Artist from the Glasgow School of Art, Crosbie found herself drawn to the medium of glass. Working in both traditional leaded glass and mosaic, she makes pieces for exhibition, public art and private commission, trading under the name Gallus Glass.
She often uses words and phrases in her work, finding inspiration from poetry, the Scots language and local places. This exhibition is inspired by the 128 Telephone Box Gallery itself.
“I can’t help thinking about all the dialogues that have taken place in the phone box over the years, the joy, the sadness, the good news and the bad.”
“How many lives were changed with a word, a phrase or a conversation?”
She asks………….“what do you say on the phone?”
If you are interested in purchasing any of the artworks you can go to Crosbie’s Etsy page or contact her directly for commissions through her website or socials (Links at end of page). Her work is highly regarded the world over.
LAUNCH DAY – 6th – 18th August 2022
The 128 Telephone Box Gallery had a wonderful launch of Crosbie’s site-specific installation, ‘VOICES’ on Saturday 6th August 2022. As you can see from the photos, Crosbie’s work integrates itself harmoniously within the telephone box. Brightly coloured leaded glass speech bubbles with intricate patterns that carry printed words of salutation, exclamation or colloquialisms shine and sway gently – as they do they reflect and cast playful shadows that change and dance like memories as time passes.
Once everyone had an opportunity to experience the installation, we proceeded to walk to Kirriemuir United Parish Church for a unique opportunity to see its extraordinary stained glass windows. Many of these were created by stained glass artist William Wilson inspired by the style of William Morris‘s arts and craft movement. Following the tour Crosbie also delivered a detailed hands-on demonstration of her process which she also linked to Wilson’s own processes. A jaw-droppingly long process that requires great skill, tenacity, mastery and artistic ability. What a day!
Special Thanks!
The 128 Telephone Box Gallery would also like to offer a special thank you to the Kirriemuir United Church for allowing us access to the church and letting us use their space. And also a special thank you to Louise Kerr from Hamilton Kerr Photography and Framing for also sending us some amazing photos. The good ones on this page were taken by these guys ha ha!
